Programmable Thermostat Giveaway!

It’s that time of year again. The time of year when slippers become a daily staple, hot tea seems to pour itself in your mug, and heating bills begin to climb to sometimes uncomfortable levels. The Home Depot wants to help you save energy and money this brisk winter season (and all year round), but we’ll get to that in just a moment.

First, let’s talk for a few minutes about programmable thermostats and what they can do for you and your home.

A programmable thermostat monitors the temperature of your home while you’re asleep or away. For example, the Rite Temp 7 Day Programmable Thermostat, an ENERGY STAR-qualified thermostat available at The Home Depot, offers temperature programming for every day of the week. And the RiteTemp Flush Mount Thermostat appears flush with the wall when mounted. Its unique touch screen and easy to read back lit screen offer a more modern look for your household thermostat.

Rite Temp 7 Day Programmable Thermostat

Programming is extremely simple. You can program the thermostat to change the set point at any time, allowing you to automatically set temperatures for different times of the day. During the winter, you can keep the house cooler while you’re at work and program the temperature to warm up when you arrive home. This programming feature is estimated to save about two percent on heating bills and more than three percent on cooling bills for each degree difference. These numbers will translate into cost savings of up to $180 a year and is well worth the time replacing your current thermostat will take.

Rite Temp Flush Mount Programmable Thermostat

A versatile thermostat that works for you, helps you go and stay green, and saves you money monthly? Sounds great, right?

Well here’s where it gets even better.

The Home Depot wants to give one lucky 5 Minutes for Going Green reader a programmable thermostat of their very own (valued at $50-$99 USD).

This would be wonderful!! We’ve always just turned it up and down by hand, but we have a new addition to our house and have been leaving the heat up instead of making yet another trip downstairs at 6:00 a.m. when he usually gets up and we’re trying to get him back to sleep. Thank you!

Slowly were replacing much of what was installed in our house when we first built it – and this is on the list. (I just learned that you should replace smoke detectors — not just the batteries — every 10 – 12 years. Add it to the list …

    Thanks!

    December 1, 2008 | 8:52 pm

Is there a list that compares all of the signficant features of programmable thermostats from various manufacturers? Many sites offer that for cars and trucks, it sure would help when selecting a programmable thermostat.

  44. Michelle
    December 2, 2008 | 5:39 am

My husband would say the only thing it’s missing is a tiny voice that would tell me “Quit touching me!” every time I go to turn up the furnace.

  45. Carolyn
    December 2, 2008 | 9:22 am

This is great. Our thermostat is very unreliable because you never have any idea where it is really set.

  46. Tammi
    December 2, 2008 | 11:17 am

I’ve had one of these on my list for years, but it never quite makes it far enough up on the list to actually get bought. I need to plant another money tree, like most people, but I’ve been lazy.

I didn’t know about smoke detectors, so thanks for that, Teri.

  47. Jean D.
    December 2, 2008 | 12:31 pm

Great contest! I set my thermostat so low because of heating costs, and man, it’s freezing around here. It would be great if the house temperature rose just before I got home each night.

    Thanks!
