This 5 Minutes For Going Green Great Green Review is brought to you by Pacific Northwest resident and new mom, Jenifer of Quarter Life Crisis. Read what she thought of her very comprehensive trial of Bummas, and then read on for details on how you can win a set for yourself!
When we found out I was pregnant with our first child last year, my husband and I decided early on that we were both committed to raising our baby as green as possible, which naturally led us down the predominantly-paved-in-plastic path to cloth diapering. When looking at the pros and cons of disposable versus cloth diapering, the decision to embrace the latter lifestyle was pretty much a no-brainer for us. Better for the baby, the environment, AND our wallets? Yes, please!
We soon discovered that cloth diapering had come a long way since my husband and I were babies, much to the chagrin of our mothers, who had no idea things had gotten so complicated in 30 years time. The rather unsophisticated method of safety pinning a giant origami-folded swath of cotton to a baby’s bum and calling it good has been mostly overshadowed by complete cloth diapering “systems,” or all-in-one diapers and covers featuring nifty inserts and closures, made from myriad fabrics and fibers. Frankly, it’s all a bit overwhelming – and not to mention, initially very expensive, too – so we opted for the old-school approach to cloth diapering, choosing to use cotton pre-folds, Snappi fasteners and cotton/plastic covers, thus making our mamas very proud.
About a week or so into our foray with cloth diapering (we made the official switch from hospital-provided newborn-sized disposables once those ran out, when our son was about four weeks old), we were given the opportunity to try and review Bummas baby-sized cloths, made especially for drying a baby’s bottom “after the wipe and before the dipe,” as the company’s motto goes. Right off the bat, it was refreshing to come across a reusable diapering accompaniment that’s completely uncomplicated in its design (small, rectangular) and purpose (mainly to prevent diaper rash), but therein lies the genius behind Bummas.
Basically, Bummas are just mini washcloths, made from 100% cotton woven velour terry cloth, but they can be used for just about anything – in lieu of a disposable wipe, to dry a baby’s butt before re-diapering, in the bath as a washcloth, to sop up bubbly baby drool. As a first-time mother to a baby boy, I was most intrigued by Bummas’ supposed ability to block and absorb “surprise squirts,” having been peed on several times the first few weeks home with baby. Of course, as soon as I had Bummas cloths at the ready, weeks went by before I experienced the dreaded geyser of pee. But eventually it did happen again, and a Bummas cloth was there to save the day. Or rather, to save the baby’s jammies and my cashmere sweater. Bravo!
Bummas cloths might not be revolutionary in concept, but they are very handy to have near the changing station or in an already-packed-to-the-gills diaper bag. They have held up well through several washes and soakings with poopy cloth diapers and covers, too. At $16.99 for a pack of 10 and available in four different eye-catching color themes, Bummas cloths would make a splendid shower gift for any expectant mother.

Here are a few more product-specific details on Bummas, from a Los Angeles, California January 28, 2009 press release:
Bummas, a new line of super soft and supple baby cloths, is helping new moms and dads say “bye bye” to uncomfortable and irritating diaper rashes. Developed by parents who suffered through diaper rashes with their own newborn son, Bummas are re-usable, eco-friendly, highly absorbent cloths designed to keep sensitive baby bottoms dry, fresh and chemical-free.
As any new parent knows, a baby’s skin is extremely sensitive. According to medical experts, diaper rashes—which commonly strike babies up to 15 months of age—are often caused by a reaction to chemicals and fragrances found in disposable wipes and diapers, or irritation from urine and stools. Since bacteria and yeast that thrive under warm, moist conditions further exacerbate diaper rashes, the best treatment is to keep a baby’s bottom clean and dry—the Bummas way.
Bummas, which are naturally hypoallergenic and antimicrobial, can be used two ways to help treat and prevent diaper rashes:
1. Use in Place of Chemical Wipes. Pediatricians are increasingly recommending that water be used to clean sensitive bums during diaper changes. Wet a Bummas with water, and wipe. No chemicals = no irritation!
2. Use to Pat Dry. Keeping a baby’s bottom dry is key to preventing diaper rash. Use a fresh, highly absorbent Bummas to gently pat the baby dry, then re-diaper.Made of woven velour terry cloth in a handy 5” x 7” size, Bummas are also available in a wide variety of attractive colors, perfect for hip, new parents with an eye for style. Bummas, affordably priced at $16.99 for a package of 10, can be conveniently purchased online at www.bummas.com.
Whether you yourself have little ones still in diapers at home, or have friends that do, Bummas will make a great addition to an already extensive family of baby-bum-protecting products.
Sounds great, right?

The chemicals in baby wipes often cause more problems..These sound like they are made softer like a washable face cloth. These are pretier too.

We just started cloth diapering a few months ago and LOVE it; however, I am encountering a problem now with the disposable wipes-what to do with them! So they just end up in a trash, or it is a mess to deal with them after I put the daiper in the laundry…SO I was JUST saying I needed to try some cloth wipes, but needed to save up the money since they have seemed kinda price-y for the up front purchase SO winning this contest would be THE GREATEST EVER. Thanks!

I would LOVE to win the Bummas for my niece and her brand new baby boy, born on Jan. 27th. I’m pretty sure she has been using baby wipes, so I would like to introduce her to a greener, safer way to clean up baby during diaper changes. Plus, just thinking about a dirty plastic diaper landfill, with dirty little baby wipes, makes me ill.
