Minimizing Your Plastic Footprint: Glass Dharma Giveaway

Keeping the Earth Week fun moving right along, today as promised we have more great green products for you to win, more Earth Day tips, and bonus links to keep you clicking green all week long.

David Leonhardt, a glassblower and the founder of Glass Dharma, the original hand-made glass drinking straw, created his own line of drinking straws to “contribute one solution to the misuse of plastics in our society.”

By now I think most of us understand the over-use of the very non eco-friendly plastic material is a huge environmental problem, one with no clear solution in sight.

Take this frightening statistic from GlassDharma.com as an example of the large part small straws play in the plastic predicament facing us today:

As of March 2008, McDonald’s serves an average of 52 million meals PER DAY! (Per their website.) How many of those served do you think were given a plastic straw?

Plain and simple, here’s how and why these glass straws work:

* Glass straws don’t leach toxins into your food as you drink.
* Each time you use your glass straw equals one less plastic straw ending up in your landfill.
* One glass straw replaces thousands of plastic straws. (How many times will you use a straw the rest of your life?)
* Using your glass drinking straw adds a feeling of beauty to your day.

GlassDharma glass drinking straws are:

* Made of borosilicate tubing– the strongest glass commercially available. This means that we have spared no expense in bringing you the strongest, most durable drinking straw possible.

* Annealed to Corning, Inc. specifications (a process that strengthens the glass). So you can have confidence you are purchasing the highest quality glass straws available.

* Made of glass which does not leach ANY TOXINS into your food. So you can use your non-toxic straws with confidence.

* Created with the beauty and elegance that only glass can give. You’ll feel like royalty-with a touch of ‘glass’.

* A great environmental addition to your kitchenware. Great for hot or cold drinks, microwave and dishwasher safe!

* Are fully backed by our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. If they don’t meet your expectations, return for a full refund.

* Covered with our unbelievable Lifetime Guarantee Against Breakage. If they ever break, we’ll replace them, for free.

Sounds pretty great, right? Where here’s where it gets even better.

GlassDharma is donating a set of 4 Simple Elegance glass drinking straws + a cleaning brush to one lucky 5MinutesForGoingGreen reader. The prize, obtained in the form of a coupon code for $30.00 (value of the set cost + shipping) can be used on the site to purchase the set.

Awesome! I was just thinking about glass drinking straws.

That statistic on number of McDonald’s meals served in a day is…frightening. And not just because of the plastic straws. Think about all of the paper that gets used. And then not recycled.

And people wonder why our society is overweight…

I always feel guilty whenever I use a (plastic) straw (very rarely) and see them tossed on tables at restaurants over-abundantly (as are paper napkins). These glass straws are perfect to combat this guilt! I wonder how easy they would be to carry in a purse (which excludes men!) to have on hand at a restaurant. Maybe a little case/cover for the straw would be a useful item too. I would imagine if people start seeing these glass straws at restaurants (either supplied by the restaurant, or brought in by other customers) that the glass straws might become a hot item. Thanks!
