Great Green Giveaway: Skeeda

By now most of us know that plastic shopping bags comprise a significant amount of the world’s plastic waste, with The Wall Street Journal estimating that the United States alone consumes 100 billion shopping bags a year. 100 billion is 99.9 billion too many.

The great thing about that outrageous number is that it can be easily and dramatically downsized, one household, and one trendy reusable canvas bag at a time.

Enter three sisters with a mission and www.skeeda.com

About Skeeda

When three sisters from a small town in upstate NY combined their passion, creativity, and concern for the environment, skeeda© was born.

Driven by a commitment to reduce waste, their goal is to tap into your sense of style to motivate you to make small changes in your daily lives to ensure a better life for future generations. In fact, future generations were the inspiration for the name. They took an initial from each of their children and created the acronym skeeda.

Skeeda sent me a bag to try for a few weeks and I can honestly tell you that (I love these bags, and) they are large and in charge while still being super cute and trendy.

I’ve received compliments almost daily because I’ve been lugging my (very full) skeeda bag to and from work since receiving it. Also: they are STRONG. Mr. T strong. No, really. When I use my bags, I USE my bags, and I can vouch for the fact that while I’ve certainly dirtied mine (it’s machine washable!), it has never stopped being able to hold a serious amount of stuff while staying 100% intact.

Speaking of my chosen bag, this is it:

Cute, no?

What’s in my skeeda right this moment? Too many things to mention without embarrassing myself. But I will tell you that over the past few weeks the bag has played portable host to myriad items simultaneously, including but not limited to:

  • My purse (I’m all about consolidating)
  • My Sigg bottle
  • Three (recycled!) notebooks
  • An assortment of books on my “to-read” list
  • My lunches for work
  • My laptop
  • Beach-going attire for an overnight getaway
  • Groceries, groceries, and more groceries

But perhaps the more important question is, what will you put in yours?

Skeeda has oh so awesomely agreed to give away two! skeeda bags to two environmentally savvy 5MinutesForGoingGreen readers.

(Total retail value: about $30 USD)

How to get in on the green giveaway action? Simple.

1) Just leave a comment on this post anytime between today, Friday March 13th, and Sunday, March 22nd by 7pm EST and consider yourself entered. (Be sure to use a valid email address when leaving your entry comments, as I’ll use that email address to notify the winner of the contest.)

2) For an additional contest entry, because we’re all about double the fun around these parts, visit www.skeeda.com and come back here and tell me which bag you would choose if you were the winner. (Feel free to also tell me what you would put in your brand new eco-friendly bag.)

On March 22rd I’ll use a random number generator to pick two! winners, so be sure to check back on the site on Monday, March 23rd to see if you’ve won!

In the meantime, skeeda has also offered to give all 5MinutesForGoingGreen readers (that would be you!) free shipping on all orders. Just use the code “5minutes” at checkout!

Here are two more of my favorites from the site, and did I mention you can also order monogrammed versions? (See also: great for baby shower gifts, bridal parties, romantic getaways, etc. etc.)

Now, what are you waiting for? Head on over to www.skeeda.com and pick out some awesome bags to add to your green collection!

These are great looking bags. I’m all for STRONG! Our family is known for loading and loading our bags. Why carry two bags when you can STUFF all the groceries into one?? Aren’t teens known for defying physics? Thanks for the post, I’ll check the Skeeda bags out.

I carry my own bags too…but I seem to forget them when I shop at Target, or NON grocery stores…I have saved a ton by using them at the grocery store. All mine are from Jewel or Whole foods…and I must admit, I am a little embarassed to take them into Target, so that may be why I foget…something cute like these…might stop that…I do however ask them to NOT put my stuff in bags if I can carry it, it’s something small or large.
I hope I win…but I just may buy my own!!

    March 13, 2009 | 9:45 am

loving the skeeda bags and woot! that they’re super durable, i give my bags a lickin! i’m in love w/ their “peony” bag, so that would def be the one i’d pick! What to fill it with.. well there are so many options, but i think that purple purty would rock for my work/everyday-lugging-around-junk-for-3-kids bag, so like yours it would be full of a wide assortment of randomness. ;) xo

  177. Kathleen
    March 18, 2009 | 6:44 pm

Oh, and I’d totally go for the eggshell. The pattern is adorable and just busy enough that when I stain it, and I will, it won’t be noticeable.

I’d probably pick the Frost, but the Peony is so pretty too. Maybe then my husband wouldn’t use it.

I’d use it for toting stuff to the pool this summer, and books from the library, and everything else!

I’m a tote bag freak and never can have enough.
We have 2 older children with families and 2 younger. My pet peeve is using plastic bags when they come to visit or when we are traveling.
I like to be organized and have items handy so I try to use totes instead.
These would be perfect for those times when they need items to be carried, and how much nicer they would be in the skeeda bag.
    Thank you.

  221. Jesselyn
    March 21, 2009 | 6:10 pm

I know this is kind of cheating, but I’d go for the “Your/My Choice 3 Pak” and my choices would be:
Tangerine, Sky and I’d have to flip a coin to decide whether to go with Berry or Olive – since both would be so lovely to carry.

[What would I carry in them – well groceries sometimes – but also all of my essentials: notebooks (computer and paper type) facial and skin must-haves, nutritious “snacks,” and clothes for layering in case of sudden changes in weather or unexpected temperature changes in stores and restaurants!

  222. Bev
    March 21, 2009 | 8:32 pm
